TheThoroughgood House was long thought to have been built by Adam Thoroughgood, an indentured servant who arrived in Virginia in 1622 and rose to prominence as a member of the House of Burgesses in Jamestown. In reality he house was most likely built around 1719 or 1720 by Adam's great Despite its small size, it was a brick structure built by someone of considerable means.
Adam may have been an indentured servant. He was granted a headright of 5,630 acres of land in the Virginia Beach area and became a prominent citizen and left property to his children.
